The written and the visual

Time and time again I witness and experience the uneasy relationship the written and the visual have to one another. They are different types of language in the extreme. Both are a product of personal experience. It is impossible to fully understand either without shared and accessible context. With an image there is the possibility that it could communicate something immediately, but to truly understand the content one requires context.

Not only does the content potentially communicate, but so does the mechanism of the path to it and the audience to whom the content is communicated. This is more finite than the interpretation by the observer, which can be any one of a myriad of responses; again very personal to the individual.

Nearly there!

The feative season has been an opportunity to move things on with this painting. I am quite pleased with the combination of the dramatic colouration of the second hand so have included a detail as well as how things are looking all together.

The person is appearing

After sitting down with this painting for a couple of evenings, the character is starting to appear.
I am starting to feel like I have got through the rough early stages a bit now.

Hands are complex creatures..

Given the number of component parts, a hand is no simple thing. This last couple of hours  I have been addressing the hand of the subject grasping a rock. I think the scaling is about right and the tones are starting to define the structure.

I LIKE painting faces…

It does take discipline to make a weekly date with my painting and I usually have to convince myself to ‘Just do a couple of hours’, but invariably I am pleased to see a painting coming to life as I work on it. This one is no exception. The face is of a comparatively small scale in camparison to other works, so has challenges associated with that, but progress is still tremendously satisfying.

Hooray! Making progress…

Firstly, may I just say the stripey shirt really is taking some concentration. So after quite some time wading around in purple again I took some time out with some flesh tones.
Progress is being made :)

Another step along the way with the portrait

An evening spent mixing shades of purple and generally being messy and it’s about now I start to wonder if it really will look any good when it’s finished…

I’m keeping going.
